Traducción comentada del inglés americano al español latinoamericano de las metáforas del duelo en el libro How to Make Friends with the Dark de Kathleen Glasgow (2019)

Abstract

La mayoría de los estudios en traducción ponen el énfasis en el resultado final y relegan el proceso a un plano secundario, lo cual invisibiliza la complejidad del acto traductor y el aporte de los traductores profesionales. Como respuesta a esta situación, aparece la traducción comentada, una modalidad de investigación que ofrece una visión clara y explicativa del proceso traductor, permitiendo a los lectores entender las decisiones adoptadas y las dificultades afrontadas. El objetivo de esta investigación es descubrir cómo se ha abordado la traducción literaria de How to Make Friends with the Dark de la autora estadounidense Kathleen Glasgow (2019) desde el enfoque funcionalista. Para realizar esta investigación, se ha dividido el proceso de traducción en tres etapas: etapa pretraslativa, etapa traslativa y etapa postraslativa, cada una de ellas involucra distintas acciones. Primero, se realizará un análisis textual del texto fuente para comprender el texto a nivel intratexual y extratextual. Luego, se iniciará con la traducción y la resolución de problemas y dificultades. Después, mediante un análisis textual-contrastivo, se examinará la manera en que las funciones comunicativas han sido transferidas al texto meta, centrándonos en las dos más relevantes: la apelativa y la referencial. El estudio concluirá con un informe que recogerá las conclusiones sobre lo que este encargo ha representado para nosotros, junto con la presentación de la traducción final del objeto de análisis.

Most translation research focuses on the final product and places the process in a secondary position, which obscures the complexity of translational activity and the value of professional translators’ work. In response to this limitation, commented translation has emerged as a type of research that offers a transparent and explanatory approach to the translation process, allowing readers to understand the decisions made and the challenges encountered. The aim of this study is to examine how the literary translation of How to Make Friends with the Dark by the American author Kathleen Glasgow (2019) has been approached from a functionalist perspective. To achieve this objective, the translation process has been divided into three stages: the pre-translation stage, the translation stage, and the post-translation stage, each involving different actions. First, a textual analysis of the source text will be conducted in order to understand it at both the intratextual and extratextual levels. Next, the translation itself will be carried out, together with the identification and resolution of problems and difficulties. Subsequently, through a textual-contrastive analysis, the study will examine how communicative functions have been transferred into the target text, with particular attention to the two most predominant ones: the appellative and the referential functions. Finally, the research will conclude with a report presenting conclusions on the implications of this assignment for the researchers, along with the final translation of the object of study.
