Abstract
This study examines how the household dependency ratio shapes food‐expenditure decisions under conditions of vulnerability, using an altruistic utility function that aggregates the preferences of multiple household members. From a behavioural economics perspective, we incorporate Elementary Preferences and argue that binding constraints generate systematic departures from the classical rational benchmark. Using Peruvian ENAHO 2020 microdata and nonparametric Nadaraya–Watson kernel estimators, we show that in macro-regions with higher food insecurity—such as the Amazon (Oriente) and the North—the dependency ratio has a statistically and economically significant effect on the household food budget share. The evidence indicates that, as scarcity intensifies, households prioritize collective welfare, consistent with consumption patterns driven by intra-household altruism rather than strictly individualistic optimization.
