Enhancing the Efficiency of a Construction Company through the Application of Lean Construction and DMAIC in the Project Planning ProcessAbstract
El sector construcción constituye un motor esencial para la economía, pues impulsa el empleo, contribuye al PBI y permite desarrollar infraestructura estratégica. Sin embargo, la dependencia de procesos manuales y la falta de estandarización limitan la eficiencia operativa, generando demoras, uso inadecuado de recursos y dificultades para garantizar el cumplimiento de los plazos. En el contexto peruano, estas limitaciones afectan con mayor intensidad a pequeñas y medianas empresas que carecen de lineamientos claros para organizar actividades, gestionar materiales y coordinar al personal. El presente estudio tiene como propósito proponer un marco de trabajo basado en Lean Construction y DMAIC orientado a incrementar la eficiencia en la planificación de proyectos. El modelo fue construido mediante una revisión detallada de la literatura y validado en una empresa constructora peruana. El diagnóstico inicial identificó tres causas raíz que afectaban el desempeño: ausencia de planificación estructurada, falta de control de materiales y limitada capacitación sobre la EDT. Tras la aplicación del modelo, los resultados evidenciaron mejoras relevantes, reduciendo los reprocesos del 35% al 12%, disminuyendo los retrasos del 38% al 15% y elevando la eficiencia total al 82%. Estos avances fortalecieron la gestión de recursos, la coordinación interna y la toma de decisiones. La contribución del estudio radica en ofrecer un marco integral que estandariza procesos, optimiza la organización del personal y mejora el uso de recursos. Así, la integración de Lean Construction y DMAIC se consolida como una estrategia efectiva para elevar la eficiencia operativa en empresas del sector en el contexto nacional.The construction sector serves as a fundamental engine for economic growth, as it promotes employment, contributes to the national GDP, and enables the development of essential infrastructure. Despite its strategic relevance, the industry continues to rely heavily on manual and non-standardized processes that limit operational efficiency. These limitations often lead to delays, inadequate resource utilization, and recurring difficulties in meeting established project deadlines. In the Peruvian context, such challenges are particularly evident in small and medium-sized construction companies, which frequently operate without clear guidelines for organizing activities, managing materials, or coordinating personnel effectively. This study aims to propose a structured framework based on Lean Construction principles and the DMAIC methodology to enhance efficiency within the project planning process. The model was developed through a comprehensive review of the existing literature and subsequently validated in a Peruvian construction firm. The initial diagnostic phase identified three primary root causes affecting performance: the absence of structured planning, insufficient control of materials, and limited training on the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Following the implementation of the proposed framework, the results demonstrated significant improvements. Rework was reduced from 35% to 12%, delays decreased from 38% to 15%, and overall efficiency increased to 82%. These outcomes strengthened resource management, improved internal coordination, and facilitated more informed decision-making. The study contributes an integrated approach that standardizes critical processes, optimizes personnel organization, and enhances the efficient use of resources. Consequently, the combined application of Lean Construction and DMAIC emerges as an effective strategy for improving operational performance within the construction sector in the Peruvian context.
