Traducción comentada de la novela juvenil queer The Brink (2022) al español: el registro juvenil y su articulación con el ritmo narrativo de suspenso desde un enfoque funcionalista

Abstract

La literatura juvenil contemporánea se caracteriza por abordar temas relacionados con la identidad, la emocionalidad adolescente y las dinámicas sociales propias de la juventud. Uno de sus rasgos más relevantes es el uso de un registro juvenil marcado por elementos que funcionan como marcadores identitarios y contribuyen a la construcción de una voz narrativa auténtica. En obras recientes, este registro convive con géneros narrativos más complejos, como el thriller, lo que genera problemas específicos en la traducción. Tal es el caso de The Brink (2022), novela juvenil queer del autor australiano Holden Sheppard, donde la oralidad adolescente, la variación del inglés australiano y el ritmo de suspenso se articulan para modelar la experiencia de sus personajes. En este contexto, la presente investigación propone una traducción comentada de este libro con el fin de analizar cómo se traslada al español latino el registro juvenil y cómo se relaciona con el suspenso. Para ello, se aplica el modelo funcionalista de Nord (1997, 2009), que organiza la investigación en tres etapas: las fases pretraslativa, traslativa y postraslativa. El estudio se sustenta en cuatro ejes teóricos principales: traducción de literatura juvenil, traducción de registro juvenil, traducción de suspenso y traducción de identidades queer. Partimos del supuesto base de que la traducción de The Brink requiere decisiones que atiendan simultáneamente a la naturalidad del registro juvenil, a la coherencia del ritmo narrativo y a la representación queer, de modo que el texto meta mantenga la función comunicativa y estética del original en la cultura meta.

Contemporary young adult literature often explores topics like identity, feelings, and the social dynamics that shape young people’s lives. One of its most distinctive features is the continuous use of the youth register, which functions as an identity marker and contributes to the construction of authentic literary characters. In recent novels, this register often coexists with more complex narrative genres, such as thrillers, which lead to specific translation problems. This happens in The Brink (2022), a queer young adult novel by Australian author Holden Sheppard, where adolescent orality, Australian English variation, and suspense-driven pacing intertwine to shape the characters’ experiences. In this context, the present research proposes an annotated translation of the book to analyze how the youth register is transferred into Latin American Spanish and how it interacts with the narrative construction of suspense. To do so, the study applies Nord’s functionalist model (1997, 2009), which structures the research into three stages: the pre-translation, translation, and post-translation. The study is based on four main theoretical categories: young adult literature translation, youth register translation, suspense translation, and queer identities translation. This study is based on the fundamental assumption that the translation of The Brink (2022) requires decisions that simultaneously address the naturalness of the youth register, the coherence of suspense’s narrative rhythm, and the representation of queer identity, so that the source text maintains the communicative and aesthetic function of the original within the target culture.
