Effectiveness of the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children in the Language in Children With Autism: A Systematic ReviewAbstract
Currently, the number of children with autism has increased worldwide, presenting challenges in early detection and intervention. In this context, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the TEACCH model in the development of language in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). For the search strategies, three databases were used—Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed—following the guidelines of Rayyan and the PRISMA model. The search was conducted in September 2025 and included texts in both English and Spanish. Regarding the results, 45 studies were initially identified through the databases, with 10 being removed as duplicates. Subsequently, 35 studies were screened based on titles and abstracts, of which 31 were excluded due to methodological issues, language, use of a different intervention model, or lack of full-text access. Finally, four studies were included in the review. All selected studies, written in English, showed that the TEACCH method is effective in improving language in children with ASD, mainly through the use of augmentative and alternative communication tools. In conclusion, the reviewed studies demonstrated significant improvements in language following the implementation of the TEACCH model, emphasizing that the effectiveness of this intervention depends on its intensity, frequency, and adaptation to the participants’ age.
