Traducción comentada del inglés al español de la novela de ficción histórica Underdogs of Japanese History de Kyota Ko

Abstract

Este trabajo presenta una traducción comentada del inglés al español de capítulos seleccionados de la novela de ficción histórica Underdogs of Japanese History de Kyota Ko. La investigación se enmarca en los estudios de traducción literaria, con especial énfasis en obras históricas divulgativas, y parte del supuesto de que una traducción de este tipo exige mantener características estilísticas y culturales del texto original, ya que su función divulgativa perdería claridad si se adaptaran plenamente al contexto meta. Se analiza el proceso traductológico considerando aspectos extratextuales, como el contexto sociocultural e histórico de los personajes, e intratextuales, como el tono narrativo, el registro y el carácter divulgativo del estilo. Además, se abordan las posibles estrategias a utilizar para resolver focos de dificultad propios del texto literario: referencias históricas japonesas, expresiones culturales y condensación informativa. El estudio describe el modo en que estos elementos se adaptarán en la versión en español, dándole importancia a la coherencia y la funcionalidad comunicativa. La propuesta busca evidenciar de qué manera de realiza el acto traductor para contribuir a la resignificación el texto en el nuevo contexto cultural sin perder su funcionalidad.

This paper presents an annotated Spanish translation of selected fragments from Underdogs of Japanese History, a historical fiction novel written by Kyota Ko. The research is situated within literary translation studies, with particular emphasis on popular historical narratives, and operates on the assumption that a translation of this kind requires retaining the original text’s stylistic and cultural features. Adapting them fully to the target culture would compromise the clarity and communicative purpose of the text’s informative nature. The translation process is analyzed through extratextual factors—such as the sociocultural and historical context of the referenced characters—and intratextual ones, including narrative tone, register, and the informative intent of the style. Furthermore, the study explores potential strategies for addressing areas of complexity inherent in literary texts, such as Japanese historical references, culturally embedded expressions, and informational density. The research describes how these elements are approached in the Spanish version, prioritizing coherence and communicative functionality. The proposal aims to show how translation enables the reinterpretation of the text in its new cultural setting, while maintaining its communicative function.
