Traducción de modismos en la versión en español latinoamericano del cómic en portugués brasileño Confinada

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la traducción de modismos en el cómic Confinada, obra brasileña de Leandro Assis y Priscila Oliveira, traducida al español latinoamericano por Julián Rodrigues García. La historia, situada en un contexto urbano durante la pandemia de COVID-19, retrata las desigualdades sociales y raciales a través de dos personajes femeninos, quienes son Fran, una influencer millonaria, y Ju, su empleada doméstica negra. En este escenario, se destacan expresiones idiomáticas del portugués popular carioca empleadas por Ju, que cumplen funciones en la caracterización sociolingüística de los personajes. Desde un enfoque funcionalista y sociolingüístico, se realiza un análisis contrastivo que permite observar cómo estas expresiones fueron traducidas, qué estrategias se aplicaron y cómo dichas decisiones inciden en la representación del personaje en el texto meta. Se concluye que la traducción de modismos en Confinada requiere más que una equivalencia semántica, implica preservar la expresividad, la función social del lenguaje y su coherencia visual y narrativa, especialmente en personajes con carga cultural como Ju.

This study analyzes the translation of idiomatic expressions in the Brazilian comic Confinada, created by Leandro Assis and Triscila Oliveira and translated into Latin American Spanish by Julián Rodrígues García. Set in urban Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic, the comic portrays social and racial inequalities through the experiences of two female characters: Fran, a wealthy white influencer, and Ju, her Black domestic worker. A key feature of the original text is Ju’s use of expressions from the Portuguese popular carioca, which play a vital role in her sociolinguistic characterization. Adopting a functionalist and sociolinguistic framework, the study conducts a contrastive analysis to examine how these idioms were translated, the strategies employed, and how the translation choices impact the representation of characters in the target text. The research identifies instances of prefabricated orality and idiomatic expressions in both the source and target versions, considering their sociocultural, expressive, and multimodal dimensions. The theoretical framework draws on approaches to idioms, dialect, orality, and translation in multimodal texts, highlighting how language reflects power dynamics, social positioning, and narrative coherence in graphic storytelling. The study concludes that translating idioms in Confinada involves more than semantic equivalence. It requires preserving the expressive value, the social function of language, and its visual and narrative consistency, especially for culturally marked characters like Ju.
