Análisis del lenguaje sexista en el doblaje del inglés al español latinoamericano en la serie estadounidense Mad Men

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia el lenguaje sexista en Mad Men (2007) y su doblaje al español latinoamericano. La serie se desarrolla en Nueva York durante los años 60 y se centra en la vida de Don Draper y de otros trabajadores de la agencia publicitaria Sterling Cooper. El lenguaje sexista de la serie responde a la ideología patriarcal de la época que construye el mundo ficticio y caracteriza a los personajes. Este lenguaje se manifiesta en los diálogos de los personajes masculinos y femeninos mediante insultos, estereotipos de género y comentarios que sexualizan a la mujer. Por consiguiente, las mujeres son inferiorizadas y encasilladas en trabajos de mayor carga laboral y menor remuneración. Asimismo, el sexismo impone ideas sobre las mujeres, sus aspiraciones, su aspecto y su sexualidad. Al respecto, diversos estudios de traducción audiovisual identifican la tendencia de intensificar el lenguaje sexista en los doblajes al español latinoamericano. No obstante, otros estudios demuestran su censura. La presente investigación coincide con esta última tendencia y concluye que el lenguaje sexista se atenúa en el doblaje, lo que repercutiría en la caracterización de los personajes y la construcción del entorno de la serie.

This paper studies the sexist language in Mad Men (2007) and its dubbing into Latin American Spanish. The series is set in New York during the 1960s and focuses on the life of Don Draper and other characters of Sterling Cooper's advertising agency. The sexist language of the series responds to the patriarchal ideology of the time that constructs the fictional world and characterizes the characters. This language manifests itself in the dialogues of the male and female characters through insults, gender stereotypes, and comments that sexualize women. Consequently, women are subordinated and placed in jobs with a heavier workload and lower pay. Sexism also enforces ideas about women, their aspirations, their appearance, and their sexuality. In this regard, several audiovisual translation studies have identified the reinforcement of sexist language in Latin American Spanish dubbing. However, other studies show its censorship. This paper agrees with the latter trend and concludes that sexist language is mitigated in the dubbing, affecting the characterization and the construction of the environment of the series.
