El objetivo del estudio fue describir la experiencia de adaptación de personas que estuvieron privadas de su libertad con prisión preventiva en un establecimiento penitenciario. Para tal fin, se realizó un estudio cualitativo con diseño de análisis temático, en el que fueron entrevistadas 8 personas de entre 30 y 50 años que estuvieron en situación de prisión preventiva. Tras el análisis de las entrevistas, se halló que la experiencia de adaptación varía según las características de la vida en prisión, el nivel socioeconómico de la persona y de su familia, el tipo de delito que se adjudica, el soporte familiar y social dentro del establecimiento penitenciario y las consecuencias de la experiencia de la vida en prisión reflejados en los ámbitos laborales, familiares y sociales de las personas absueltas. Se concluye que el nivel socioeconómico y el soporte familiar cumplen los roles más fundamentales para adaptarse a la vida en prisión.The objective of the study was to describe the adaptation experience of people who were deprived of their liberty with preventive detention in a penitentiary establishment. For this purpose, a qualitative study with a thematic analysis design was carried out, in which 8 people between 30 and 50 years old who were in preventive detention were interviewed. After analyzing the interviews, it was found that the adaptation experience varies according to the characteristics of life in prison, the socioeconomic level of the person and their family, the type of crime that is awarded, family and social support within the prison. penitentiary establishment and the consequences of the experience of life in prison reflected in the work, family and social spheres of the acquitted people. It is concluded that socioeconomic level and family support play the most fundamental roles in adapting to life in prison
