Análisis del doblaje y la subtitulación del African American Vernacular English (AAVE) al español latinoamericano en diálogos de personajes afroestadounidenses en Roxanne Roxanne (2017) y Beats (2019)

Abstract

El African American Vernacular English (AAVE) ha sido objeto de estudio común en el campo de la TAV; sin embargo, se le ha prestado poca atención a las estrategias de subtitulación de este fenómeno en comparación con las del doblaje. Este sociolecto funciona como un medio de representación de la comunidad afroestadounidense y supone un desafío en la traducción audiovisual, ya que se debe mediar con las características lingüísticas y culturales que definen el AAVE y construyen los personajes y las tramas de las películas. Por ello, la presente investigación tiene como propósito analizar el doblaje y el subtitulado del AAVE al español latinoamericano en los diálogos de las películas Roxanne Roxanne (2017) y Beats (2019). Partimos del supuesto de que el proceso de traducción implicó la omisión parcial o total de los elementos culturales y lingüísticos del AAVE, lo que podría afectar la representación de la identidad afroestadounidense al caer en recursos estigmatizantes, estereotipados o satirizados. Por este motivo, se identificarán los rasgos lingüísticos que componen el AAVE, así como las estrategias y técnicas de traducción empleadas para la transferencia de la identidad afroestadounidense al español latinoamericano. Esta investigación se enmarca en teorías sobre variación lingüística, oralidad prefabricada y traducción audiovisual para estudiar la manifestación del AAVE por medio del doblaje y el subtitulado al español latino. Por último, este estudio busca reforzar las teorías sobre los desafíos y posibilidades en la traducción de dialectos con un enfoque cultural en el campo audiovisual mediante la observación y el análisis de estrategias y técnicas de traducción en filmes contemporáneos.

African American Vernacular English (AAVE) has been a common study subject in the AVT field; however, the subtitling strategies of this phenomenon have received little attention compared to dubbing. This sociolect functions as a means of representing the African American community. It poses a challenge in audiovisual translation since it mediates with the linguistic and cultural characteristics that define AAVE and construct the characters and plots of the films. Therefore, this research aim is to analyze the dubbing and subtitling of AAVE into Latin American Spanish in the dialogues of the movies Roxanne Roxanne (2017) and Beats (2019). We assume that the translation process involved the partial or total omission of AAVE's cultural and linguistic elements, which could affect the representation of African American identity by falling into stigmatizing, stereotypical, or satirized resources. For this reason, we will identify the linguistic features that characterize AAVE, and the translation strategies and techniques used to transfer African American identity to Latin-American Spanish. This research is framed in theories on linguistic variation, prefabricated orality, and audiovisual translation to study AAVE manifestation through dubbing and subtitling into Latin American Spanish. Finally, this study seeks to reinforce theories on the challenges and possibilities in dialect translation with a cultural focus in the audiovisual field by observing and analyzing translation strategies and techniques in contemporary films.
