The methodology used is qualitative with a non-experimental exploratory approach. 20 articles published in indexed academic journals and books on the concept of informality in markets were reviewed. Additionally, five in-depth interviews were carried out with the objective of obtaining relevant information on the factors that drive merchants in Northern Lima to operate informally. The results revealed various causes, among which the lack of training and training for informal traders, unemployment, bureaucracy in the paperwork process, high costs of taxation and registration for formalization and limitations in access to financing stand out. These factors contribute significantly to the persistence of informality in the sector. It is concluded that there is a willingness on the part of informal traders to want to formalize themselves due to the benefits they have by becoming formal traders. Informal commerce affects the local economy, business competitiveness and the protection of labour rights by evading tax and labour regulations.
