Competence and financial solvency of mutual fund management companies in ChileAbstract
El mercado de fondos mutuos en Chile experimentó en los últimos años un notable crecimiento en términos de patrimonio neto gestionado, número de partícipes y cantidad de sociedades administradoras de fondos. Este desarrollo puede atribuirse a la estrategia competitiva de las SAFM que operan en la industria. En este contexto, el presente artículo analiza el efecto de la competitividad del mercado sobre la solidez financiera de las sociedades que gestionan fondos mutuos en Chile entre los años 2009 y 2021. Utilizando la data de la Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros de Chile (SVS) se emplearán indicadores como el índice Herfindahl-Hirschman (HHI) para medir el grado de competitividad en el sector de fondos mutuos, y como medida de solvencia financiera será el Z-Score. Los hallazgos revelan la presencia de una relación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre el grado de competencia en el mercado y la solvencia financiera de las SAFM chilenas.The mutual fund market in Chile has experienced significant growth in recent years in terms of net assets under management, number of participants and number of fund management companies. This development can be attributed to the competitive strategy of the SAFMs operating in the industry. In this context, this article analyzes the effect of market competitiveness on the financial strength of the companies that manage mutual funds in Chile between 2009 and 2021. Using data from the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance of Chile (SVS), indicators such as the Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI) will be used to measure the degree of competitiveness in the mutual fund sector, and the Z-Score will be used as a measure of financial solvency. The findings reveal the presence of a positive and statistically significant relationship between the degree of competition in the market and the financial solvency of Chilean SAFMs.
