Effects of Poverty on Educational Outcomes During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic in Primary Education (2018-2022)Abstract
The study analyzes the effects of monetary poverty on educational achievement at the primary level in Peru during and after the COVID-19 pandemic (2018-2022). Data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) conducted by INEI are used. A random-effects panel Probit model is employed to estimate the impact of monetary poverty, the pandemic, and the interaction between both variables on educational achievement. Other variables such as gender and age are controlled for. A significant negative effect of monetary poverty on the academic performance of primary school children is observed, although the post-pandemic impact does not show a deterioration in educational achievements. However, currently, the condition of monetary poverty has become more relevant for academic performance after the pandemic. It is also found that poverty affects educational outcomes differently during the pandemic, with a significant increase in educational results. Student characteristics such as being male and age also influence educational performance. These results highlight the importance of addressing educational disparities and monetary poverty, especially in socially disadvantaged environments, in response to future challenges.
