Analysis of the visual elements of album covers found in Latin American subgenres of cumbia as a narrative tool to create identitiesAbstract
Latin America has witnessed the emergence of various artistic expressions that have endured to the present day. One of them, in particular, has served as a link between the different countries that make up that region: the musical genre cumbia. Although evidence has shown that this genre has been adapted to several Latin American contexts, this research will focus only on the variants of cumbia found in Peru, Chile, and Mexico. Each of these countries has undergone different social, cultural, and political processes that have influenced the musical and graphic development of their respective cumbia variants. In terms of graphic design, a number of key actors were involved in the creation of a distinct identity for each variant by designing the visual elements of album covers. Hence, this study seeks to analyze the relationship between those elements and the countries where they were designed, the goal being to demonstrate that the distinct album covers of the three analyzed cumbia subgenres have an identity value among people in their respective regions. It should be noted that very little research has been devoted to the visual aspects of cumbia, for which reason this research has the potential to shed new light on the subject.
