Perceived stress and emotional self-regulation in young people during the COVID-19 pandemicAbstract
The present study aimed to determine the relationship between perceived stress and emotional self-regulation in young adults from northern Lima during mandatory social isolation in the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 336 people participated; 120 men (35.7 %) and 216 women (64.3 %), whose ages ranged from 20 to 30 years (M = 23; SD = 2.84), residing in the districts of San Martin de Porres, Comas, Los Olivos and Independencia. It was administered, the Global Stress Global Perception Scale of Guzman and Reyes (2018) and the Emotional Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Gargurevich and Matos, 2010). The results reveal that there are small and direct correlations between global stress and emotional self-regulation, as well as, suppression with distress, and cognitive reappraisal with eustress. On the other hand, cognitive reappraisal and distress, as well as suppression and eustress, present an inverse and negative correlation. Likewise, emotional self-regulation has small and direct correlations with distress and eustress. Regarding gender, men perceive greater eustress, compared to women, who perceive more distress. Finally, with respect to the frequency of going out, it was found that there is greater discomfort, the greater the number of outings.
