Social representations of mindfulness in a group of meditators from Metropolitan LimaAbstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the social representations of mindfulness in a group of meditators living in Metropolitan Lima. In order to reach the proposed objective, the phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used. The participants were 10 users who practiced mindfulness two or more times a week for at least one year. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted and their content was subsequently analyzed. The results showed that the participants assemble the representation of mindfulness through the practice itself. During the meditation process, the subjects delve into an internal space that allows self-cognition and self-reflection, creating new information that influences the representation they have in regards of mindfulness. Following the same line, it was concluded that the configuration of these representations relies on the improvement in interpersonal development, an increase in the understanding and interaction with external surroundings, and a bigger awareness of the cognitive process.
