Psychometric properties of the Modified Coping Strategies Scale (CES-M) in low-income adolescents from HuanchacoAbstract
The objective of this research was to provide evidence of the validity and reliability of the Modified Coping Strategies Scale (CES-M) in adolescents from Huanchaco. An instrumental study and an intentional non-probabilistic sampling were proposed in 295 adolescents (49.5% women and 50.5% men) from eight state schools of Huanchaco-Trujillo who attend the degrees: second (9.2%), third (35.3%) , fourth (42%) and fifth (13.6%) of high school. As a finding related to validity based on internal structure, an exploratory factor analysis (KMO = .78) was performed, which resulted in the original reduction of the instrument to 52 items and 7 dimensions (34.4% of the explained variance). Regarding the reliability of the dimensions, the first factor, called Search for support, with an omega of .87. The second factor, called Positive resolution, with an omega of .82. The third factor, Religion, with an omega of .70. The fourth factor, Emotional avoidance, with an omega of .72. The fifth factor, Wait, with an omega of .71. The sixth factor, Aggressive reaction, with an omega of .70. The seventh factor, Cognitive avoidance, with an omega of .61. Conclusions: The dimensions that emerged in the test identify the coping strategies linked to tolerance, coping and avoiding it. Of the 7 components already reduced by the analysis, 2 of them have been merged with two dimensions that were originally found by the author. It is concluded that the adapted version of the CEE-M presents adequate psychometric properties in the study sample.
