Evaluation of the perception, experience in diagnosis and management of erosive tooth wear among dentists in Lima, PeruAbstract
Objetivo: Evaluar la percepción, experiencia en diagnóstico y manejo de la erosión dental de odontólogos de Lima, Perú. Materiales y métodos: El estudio fue de tipo observacional, descriptivo y transversal. 266 odontólogos de Lima, Perú fueron encuestados a través de un cuestionario validado para evaluar su percepción, experiencia en diagnóstico y manejo de erosión dental; enviado a través de plataformas digitales en el periodo de septiembre del 2021 a febrero del 2022. Se realizaron análisis univariado a través de la estadística descriptiva, se obtuvo la frecuencia absoluta y relativa de las variables cualitativas; y análisis bivariado a través de la prueba Chi Cuadrado para comparar la variable “decisiones de tratamiento” según “años de experiencia”. Resultados: La mayoría de los odontólogos de Lima, Perú (91.35%) registran lesiones por erosión dental pero muy pocos usan un índice específico (14.29%); y ocasionalmente registran diario dietético del paciente (43.61%) y miden la producción salival (50%). Los odontólogos con menos de 6 años de experiencia optan por tratamientos más conservadores que los odontólogos con más de 6 años de experiencia en uno de los casos presentados, (p=0.008). Conclusiones: Los odontólogos evaluados diagnostican y registran lesiones por erosión dental, pero se hallaron deficiencias en el registro, no utilizan un índice específico, así como tampoco registran los factores de riesgo. Los odontólogos con menos años de experiencia realizan tratamientos más conservadores.Objective: To evaluate the perception, experience in diagnosis and management of erosive tooth wear of dentists in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: This is an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. 266 dentists from Lima, Peru were surveyed through of a validated questionnaire to evaluate their perception, experience in diagnosis and management of erosive tooth wear; sent through digital platforms in the period from September 2021 to February 2022. The univariate analysis were performed through descriptive statistics, obtaining absolute and relative frequency of the qualitative variables; and bivariate analysis through the Chi Square test to compare the variable "treatment decisions" according to "years of experience". Results: The majority of dentists in Lima, Peru (91.35%) register dental erosive lesions but very few use a specific index (14.29%); and occasionally record the patient's dietary diary (43.61%) and measure salivary production (50%). Dentists with less than 6 years of experience opt for more conservative treatments than dentists with more than 6 years of experience in one of the cases presented, (p=0.008). Conclusions: The evaluated dentists diagnose and register dental erosion lesions, but deficiencies were found in the registry, they do not use a specific index as well as do not register risk factors. Dentists with fewer years of experience perform more conservative treatments.
