Objetivo: Evaluar la erosión dental auto-reportada y la ingesta de dieta ácida en los estudiantes de las selecciones deportivas de una universidad privada de Lima-Perú. Materiales y métodos: Este estudio fue descriptivo y transversal. Se evaluaron 222 deportistas de una universidad privada de Lima-Perú. Se utilizó una encuesta auto-aplicable de 28 preguntas en las cuales se evalúa los hábitos de higiene oral, salud bucal y dieta ácida. Para el análisis descriptivo, se usó la frecuencia absoluta y relativa y para el análisis bivariado, se realizó la prueba exacta de Fisher para determinar la asociación entre la erosión dental y todas las demás variables, si era menor a 0,5 existía asociación. Resultados: La presencia de erosión dental autoreportada fue de 5.86% con un rango de edad entre 18 a 21 años de 76.58%, divididos por deportes en grupo y unitarios (72.97% y 27.03%); presentaron una frecuencia de entrenamiento de 5 a 7 veces por semana (55.41%). En la sección de hábitos de higiene oral (29.28%) no sabían qué tipo de cerdas tenía su cepillo dental. Adicional a ello, podemos encontrar que solo 7.21% sufre regurgitación, 11.26% siente sabor ácido en la boca y 4.05% presentan sensibilidad al consumir alimentos. En relación con los hábitos alimenticios, el consumo de comida picante muchas veces a la semana fue de 13.96%, consumo de frutas cítricas 1-2 veces al día fue 30.63% y las bebidas deportivas las consumían sólo 2.70% más de 2 veces al día. Se encontró que más del 50% no consumía bebidas deportivas, carbonatas, energéticas y vino. Conclusión: No se encontró asociación entre el consumo de dieta ácida y erosión dental auto-reportada. Se observó un bajo consumo de bebidas deportivas, comidas picantes, vino y alimentos cítricos.Objective: Evaluate self-reported dental erosion and consumption of acidic diet in students of sports teams in a private university of Lima-Peru. Materials and methods: The present study was descriptive and transversal. A total of 222 athletes of a private university of Lima-Peru was evaluated. It used a self-applying questionnaire with 28 questions that evaluated oral hygiene habits, dental health, and acidic diet. Statistical analyses were performed, for univariate was used the absolute and relative frequencies. The Fisher exact test was used in the bivariate analysis to decide the association between dental erosion and all the other variables. Results: The presence of self-reported dental erosion was 5.86% with an age range between 18 to 21 years old of 76.58%, divided in group and unit sports (72.97% ,27.03%,) frequency between 5 to 7 times/week (55.41%). In the section of oral hygiene habits, 29.28% did not know what type of toothbrush used and 53.60% never or rarely used a mouth rinse. Further, only 7.21% suffer regular regurgitation, 11.26% experienced acidic taste in the mouth and 4.05% have some tooth sensibility. Regarding to eating habits, the consumption of spicy foods many times a week 13.96%, citrus fruits 1-2 times/day 30.63%, sports drinks more of 2 time/day only 2.70%. More than 50% did no consumed sports drinks, soft drinks, and wine. Conclusion: There is no association between the consumption of acidic diet and self-reported dental erosion. It was observed a low consumption of sports drinks, spicy foods, wine, and citrus fruits.
