Death and suicide in peruvian older adults: a qualitative studyAbstract
Objetivo: Analizar los significados de muerte y suicidio en adultos mayores que asisten a un Centro Integral del Adulto Mayor (CIAM) de Lima Metropolitana. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio cualitativo con un diseño de análisis temático reflexivo, se aplicó entrevistas semiestructuradas en profundidad a cinco adultos mayores de ambos sexos. Los datos recolectados se analizaron utilizando la técnica del análisis temático. Resultados: Para el adulto mayor, el significado de muerte y suicidio comprende los significados sobre preocupaciones ante la muerte, que implican la preocupación por la salud, la familia y el depender de otra persona; por otro lado, los significados sobre el suicidio abordan las interrogantes frente a este acto, así como su rechazo; finalmente, los significados sobre la adaptación a la idea de muerte, comprende la aceptación de dicha situación, así como la satisfacción por lo vivido. Conclusiones: La adultez mayor es una etapa en donde se presentan una serie de crisis, las cuales pueden verse como factores de riesgo suicida. Sin embargo, esta etapa trae también una adaptación satisfactoria y un control emocional que favorece la imagen positiva de sí mismo.Objective: To analyze the meanings of death and suicide in older adults who attend a Centro Integral del Adulto Mayor (CIAM) in Lima Metropolitana. Materials and methods: A qualitative study was carried out with a reflexive thematic analysis design, in-depth semi-structured interviews were applied to five older adults of both sexes. The data collected was analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. Results: For the older adult, the meaning of death and suicide includes the meanings about concerns about death, which imply concern for health, family and depending on another person; on the other hand, the meanings about suicide address the questions about this act, as well as its rejection; finally, the meanings about the adaptation to the idea of death, includes the acceptance of said situation, as well as the satisfaction for what has been experienced. Conclusions: Older adulthood is a stage where a series of crises occur, which can be seen as suicide risk factors. However, this stage also brings a satisfactory adaptation and emotional control that favors a positive self-image.
