Objectives: Find association between maternal depressive symptoms and overweight/obesity in their children of ages 0-5 and other factors associated to these problems. Methodology: Transversal study through secondary base analysis (ENDES 2016). The sample was 7935 children with their mothers. The dependent variable was childhood overweight/obesity according z-score of BMI and the independent main variable was the maternal depressive symptoms following the PHQ9 score. The program used was STATA MP version 14.0 to perform the statistical analysis Results: Prevalence of overweight/obesity in children of ages 0-5 was 4.5% and the moderate and severe depressive symptoms in mothers was 7.1%. The maternal depressive symptoms were not found to be associated to the outcome (aPR = 1.36 95%CI = 0.59-3.09). Association was found between overweight/obesity in children and socioeconomic status Q3 (aPR = 3.86 95%CI = 1.9-7.6), Q4 (aPR = 5.53 95%CI = 2.76-11.1), Q5 (aPR = 6.9 95%CI = 3.24-14.7), maternal IMC (aRP = 1.06 95%CI = 1.03-1.08) and C-section birth (aRP = 1.42 95%CI = 1.01-1.99). Discussion: The lack of association between the maternal depressive symptoms and overweight/obesity was also found in other foreign studies carried out in children of different ages. Peruvian and foreign studies support the association between higher socioeconomic status and excess weight in children. Likewise, others support the association between maternal BMI and birth by C section with excess weight in children. Conclusions: No association was found between maternal depressive symptoms and overweight/obesity. The superior quintiles of socioeconomic status, maternal BMI and C-section birth were associated to overweight/obesity.
