Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental caries in primary and permanent teeth in schoolchildren aged 6-12 years according to the "Spectrum Caries Assessment and Treatment" CAST epidemiological tool in a public school in the city of Chilca during the months of July-December 2014. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study where 190 participants, 103 males and 87 females were evaluated. The participants were between the ages of 6-12 years of age; who attends a Chilca District public school. Evaluation of the main variables was performed: each tooth decay and tooth, using the index "CAST" Spectrum Caries Assessment and Treatment. For index calibration, Kappa value was obtained, for the inter-examiner calibration, whose value was of 0.83. Results: For both, primary and permanent teeth, code 0 was the most prevalent code, with 49.72% and 78.49% respectively. A caries prevalence of 44.11% (3 - 7 code) was obtained in the primary teeth. A caries prevalence of 16.74% (3 - 7 code) was obtained in permanent teeth. The code of dental caries was more often 3 in both primary and permanent teeth with 15.65% and 10.81% respectively. Teeth with pulp commitment were recorded presenting 5.11% in the deciduous teeth and 0.34% in the permanent teeth. Conclusions: In the study population, it was found that the deciduous teeth showed a higher prevalence of tooth decay (codes 3-7) than permanent teeth. For both groups code was 3 was the most prevalent code, with 15.65% and 10.81% respectively. By using this tool more detailed stages of dental caries were obtained, which will be useful for oral health planners of oral health report was obtained.
