Purpose: The aim of this study was to compared in vitro the microtensile bond strength in enamel of bovine incisor using a self etching adhesive (Single Bond ™ Universal) versus total etch adhesive (Adper ™ Single Bond 2) and evaluate the failure mode. Materials and Methods: This was an experimental study in vitro. Forty bovine incisors were used, being divided into two groups according to the adhesive type to be applied, G1 (Conventional Adhesive – Adper™ Single Bond), and G2 (Universal Adhesive – Single Bond™ Universal). Previously the teeth were disinfected, the pulp chamber being removed. For each group the buccal surface was prepared with water sandpaper and only in the G1 group phosphoric acid at 37% was placed. The adhesive for each group was then applied, as directed by the manufacturer, and a 4mm block of photoactive composite resin (3M ESPE Filtek™ Z350 XT) was placed in each bovine incisor. After 24 hours, these teeth were taken to a cutting machine for samples, in a little stick form, to test the bond strength, which was performed using a universal testing machine (INSTRON®). After the test of microtensile bond, the samples were taken to the optical microscope to watch the incidence of failure mode. Results: The values obtained for bond strength were measured in Mpa; G1 (Conventional Adhesive – Adper™ Single Bond), group was 14.24 ± 5.09 and group G2 (Universal Adhesive – Single Bond™ Universal) was 10.40 ± 3.74 Comparing the bond strength statistically significant differences were found (p=0.002). The most common failure type was the mixed in fractures generated by the testing test. Conclusions: The total etch adhesive (Adper™ Single Bond 2) had a higher bond strength than self etch adhesive (Universal Single Bond™) in enamel of bovine incisors. Also mixed group was the highest result in the failure mode.
