Aim: An in vitro experimental study was carried out in order to evaluate the roughness of enamel and dentin of bovine teeth eroded by isotonic drinks. Materials and Methods: Sixty (60) extracted bovine teeth were used. They were stored in distilled water at room temperature. Thirty (30) 10mmx6mm enamel specimens and thirty (30) 10mmx6mm dentin specimens were cut, which were selected due to their parallelism, uniformity and thickness of 2mm and more. They were divided into 6 groups. Group 1: bovine enamel exposed to the isotonic drink Gatorade® Perform2, Group 2: bovine dentin exposed to the isotonic drink Gatorade® Perform2, Group 3: bovine enamel exposed to the isotonic drink Electrolight®, Group 4: bovine dentin exposed to the isotonic drink Electrolight®, Group 5: bovine enamel exposed to the isotonic drink Powerade® ION4 and Group 6: bovine dentin exposed to the isotonic drink Powerade® ION4. Two coats of nail polish were applied on the middle of the specimens’ surface before subjecting them to the erosive challenge, being it considered as control of the own specimen. The erosive challenge was performed for five-minute periods, three times a day for five days. When the challenge was concluded, the surface wear was analyzed with the Mitutoyo SJ-201® Surface Roughness Tester which shows roughness profiles. Each piece was measured three times over the same surface but in different areas of the enamel and dentin interface subjected to the experiment. The average was obtained from these three results. Results: A significant difference was found between the initial and final roughness of enamel and dentin after the erosive challenge. Statistically significant differences were not found in the measurement of roughness caused by the 3 drinks in each substrate. For enamel specimens, it was found an initial and final average in Group 1 (Gatorade Perform 02) of (0.22±0.78/0.54±0.56), in Group 2 (Electrolight®) of (0.05±0.18/, 0.18±0.05), in Group 3 (Powerade ION4) of (0.04±0.13/0.19±0.12) and in dentin (0.29±0.78/0.47±0.12), (0.32±0.13/0.44±0.13) and (0.31±0.08/0.42±0.1). Conclusion: Isotonic drinks cause an increase in roughness of enamel and dentin after the erosive challenge.
