Tipo

spaDescripción
Objective: Enamel pearls are anomalies that may act as a physical barrier in plaque accumulation and dental calculus and these may be at higher risk for periodontal involvement and inflamation. The aim of this study was to do a radiographic evaluation of the prevalence of enamel pearls in patients from the teaching hospital of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC). Study design: One thousand panoramic X- rays taken from the USmile software were analyzed. The following information was recorded: number of patient’s medical records, age, gender, the presence of enamel pearls specifying the location in the maxila or mandible as well as the number of teeth. Absolute and relative frequency measurements were registered. Results: Enamel pearls were detected in 11.40% of the population. This dental anomaly affected more the maxilla (54.30%) than the mandible (40.40%). A higher prevalence of enamel pearls was found in the maxillary second molars (33.33%). The prevalence of enamel pearls was greater in women (62.28%) as well as in the age range from 15 to 25 years (72.81%). Enamel pearls are not uncommon anomalies among the patients of the Peruvian population: therefore, its early detection is particulary important to prevent future periodontal problems. Conclusion: Enamel pearls are not uncommon anomalies among the patients from the teaching hospital of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC).: therefore, its early detection is pf utmost importance to prevent future periodontal problems.Colecciones
