Developmental enamel defects (DED) have been defined as alterations in dental enamel’s structure. Aim: This study is aimed at stablishing the prevalence of DED and its relation with the predisposing factors among children aged 6-13 years attending a public educational institution located in Ate Vitarte (Lima, Peru). Materials and Methods: It was a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional and prospective study. A total of 323 children, both male and female, were assessed using the Index DED Modified as well as the Dean's Index. Besides, a survey to their parents was conducted in order to associate these defects with their predisposing factors such as breastfeeding, common newborn problems, among others. It was got of data analyzed, the rate and percentage. Besides, it was performed by the Pearson chi-square test. Results: The prevalence of DED was 48.30%, while 8.06% was related to dental fluorosis. Male children showed more DED occurrences, with a 27.25%. The most common DED found were demarcated opacities in permanent dentition and diffuse opacities in deciduous dentition. These results differ from dental hypoplasia, which was the defect with lower percentage in both types of dentition. The factors statistically associates were: maternal age at birth of his child, maternal age at the moment of birth and mother’s education background. It was found a significance level of p= 0.003, p=0.044 y p=0.046, respectively. Conclusion: It was proved that exist DDE association with some of the predisposing factors evaluated. It suggests reproduce this research in a wide population and different regions of the country.
